This extraordinary 13.5-inch Framed Guru Rinpoche Statue presents Padmasambhava, “The Lotus Born,” within an unusually elaborate architectural composition. Handmade from copper alloy using the traditional lost wax method, the sculpture has been given a deep oxidized antiquated finish that emphasizes its extensive hand-carved ornamentation. The removable Guru Rinpoche figure sits upon a richly decorated lotus throne supported by a substantial multi-tier stepped pedestal, while an imposing removable mandorla rises behind him. Together these elements create a shrine-like presentation measuring 13.5 inches high, 10.5 inches wide and 6.25 inches deep.
Framed Guru Rinpoche Statue Craftsmanship
The craftsmanship extends far beyond the central figure. Raised repoussé ornamentation surrounds the lotus throne, while geometric borders, scrolling motifs and Buddhist symbols decorate the stepped architectural base. Particularly noteworthy is the central Dharma wheel on the front of the stepped throne, flanked by two stylized Buddhist lion guardians. These protective figures reinforce the throne’s architectural character, while additional Dharma wheel motifs appear on the side panels. Behind Guru Rinpoche, the elaborate pierced mandorla rises in an arch of scrolling ornament and culminates in another Dharma wheel above his head.

Guru Rinpoche is represented with the attributes that distinguish his traditional form. His right hand holds the vajra, symbolizing indestructible awakened wisdom and skillful means. Resting upon his left palm is the kapala skull cup containing the longevity vase and its deathless nectar. The khatvanga rises beside his shoulder and bears three impaled heads, symbolizing transcendence of the three realms of desire, form and formlessness. His characteristic lotus hat is crowned by a vulture feather representing realization of the highest view. Padmasambhava and the Establishment of Buddhism in Tibet
