Tibetan Kapala Set
A Tibetan kapala set is built around the skull cup, one of the most recognisable objects in Vajrayana Buddhism — held aloft by wrathful protectors, cradled by dakinis, appearing in the left hand of deity after deity across Himalayan art. Kapala is Sanskrit for the cranial bowl, and its meaning is not morbid but pointed: the cup is a reminder that the body is borrowed and temporary, and that what appears fearful can be turned toward awakening rather than fled from. Confronting impermanence directly, rather than politely, is the whole point of the form.
Every Tibetan kapala set we sell is made entirely of metal. These are not human remains and contain no bone — our artisans in Patan shape the bowl to the oval of the cranium and work it in copper alloy, white metal and brass, some finished in oxidized patina and one fire gilded in 24 karat gold. That matters practically as well as ethically: a metal kapala crosses borders without the customs and legal complications that attach to genuine bone, and it can be cleaned and used indefinitely.
In practice the kapala holds the inner offering. Texts describe it as blood or amrita, the nectar of immortality, while in contemporary ritual the cup is filled with black tea, wine or consecrated water — the substance matters less than the transformation it stands for, the ordinary transmuted into wisdom nectar. Placed on the altar, it is offered to the wrathful deities, blessed by the lama during empowerment, and shared among those present. You will see the same cup in the hands of Mahakala and Vajrayogini, who holds it paired with the curved kartika knife.
Our Tibetan kapala sets range from 5.75 to 7 inches and are hand engraved throughout, the ornament worked into the bowl, its supporting stand and its cover. Each Tibetan kapala set is made by hand in the Kathmandu Valley, so no two carry identical engraving.
