Tibetan Thangka Paintings — Handmade in Nepal

A thangka is a Tibetan Buddhist scroll painting — a portable sacred image used as a support for visualization, mantra recitation, and daily practice. Every thangka in our collection is hand painted in Nepal by Himalayan artists trained in the traditional Newari and Tibetan schools, following the strict iconometric grids that govern the proportions, posture, attributes, and color of each deity. Most are finished with genuine 24K gold detailing applied by hand to the ornaments, jewelry, thrones, and aureoles, and many are mounted in traditional silk brocade frames.

Our Buddha thangkas include Shakyamuni Buddha thangkas depicting the historical Buddha in the earth-touching mudra, Amitabha Buddha thangkas showing the Buddha of Infinite Light in his Western Pure Land of Sukhavati, Medicine Buddha thangkas — Bhaisajyaguru, Sangye Menla, the blue Healing Buddha holding the myrobalan plant — and Maitreya Buddha thangkas portraying the Future Buddha who will appear when the present Dharma has faded. Amitayus, the longevity aspect of Amitabha, also appears in the collection.

Among the Bodhisattvas you will find Avalokiteshvara thangkas in his Chenrezig and thousand-armed, 11 Head forms, and Tara thangkas in both her White and Green emanations — the seven-eyed goddess of long life and healing, and the swift mother of liberation. The collection also includes Vajrasattva, both alone and in union with his consort, Vajrapani the wielder of the vajra, and Saraswati, goddess of learning and the arts. Practitioners seeking protector and wealth deities will find Guru Rinpoche, Palden Lhamo, Dorje Shugden, and Yellow Dzambhala among our thangka paintings.

Several works in the collection are large devotional compositions of a kind rarely offered outside the monasteries: 108 Shakyamuni and 108 Chenrezig thangkas, in which the central figure is surrounded by a hundred and eight repetitions of himself; a thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara; and mandala thangkas including a Shakyamuni Buddha mandala and a Kalachakra mandala painting. Sizes range from compact paintings of around 15 inches, suited to a small altar or meditation room, to monumental works measuring more than four feet — including brocade-mounted pieces approaching five feet in height.
