This impressive 14.5-inch Framed Shakyamuni Buddha Statue portrays the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, or Shakya Thubpa, seated in meditation within an exceptionally elaborate openwork aureole. Handmade in Patan, Nepal from copper alloy using the traditional lost-wax casting method, the sculpture is finished with a deep antiquated oxidized patina that emphasizes its sculptural contours rather than relying upon gilding. Without the frame, the Shakyamuni figure measures 13 inches high, while the complete composition reaches 14.5 inches. Shakyamuni sits in the full vajra posture with his right hand extended across the knee in Bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture associated with the moment of his enlightenment. The face is deliberately left in the same antiquated copper finish as the body, allowing the softly modeled eyelids, calm mouth and balanced proportions to create the expression without painted decoration. Tightly arranged hair curls rise into the ushnisha, while elongated earlobes and three neck lines preserve the classical physical characteristics associated with an enlightened Buddha. Fine scrolling borders follow the robe across the chest, shoulder and sleeve, providing a restrained decorative contrast against the broad polished areas of oxidized copper.
The most distinctive feature of this Framed Shakyamuni Buddha Statue is its removable three-lobed aureole. Deep openwork scrolling vines, rounded buds and foliate motifs surround the head and upper body, rising toward a pointed central crest. The frame creates substantial depth around the seated figure while maintaining the same dark antiquated finish. Removing it produces a simpler standalone Shakyamuni presentation, giving the owner two distinctly different display options.
