This 10.75″ Medicine Buddha statue is fully fire gilded in 24K gold throughout — figure, robes, and double lotus throne — handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by a master Newar artisan using the traditional lost wax sculpting method. The most distinctive feature of this statue is the presence of Tibetan auspicious symbols (Tashi Tagye) engraved throughout the robes and pedestal — sacred emblems that are standard in Tibetan Buddhist ritual art but relatively rare as robe engraving work on Medicine Buddha statues. Additionally, a diamond is engraved on his palm and a vajra appears on the top layer of the rear pedestal.

The Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism — parasol, golden fish, treasure vase, lotus, conch shell, endless knot, victory banner, and Dharma wheel — are traditionally displayed as a set representing the complete range of blessings that accompany the presence of a Buddha. Their appearance on a Medicine Buddha statue is iconographically fitting: each symbol in the set corresponds to an aspect of the healing and liberating function that Medicine Buddha embodies — protection from suffering, liberation from the ocean of cyclic existence, abundance of merit and blessings, purity and the capacity for enlightenment, the spread of healing Dharma, the interdependence of conditions for recovery, triumph over the four Maras that obstruct practice, and the wheel of the Dharma path as the ultimate medicine for all afflictions. The vajra on the rear pedestal reinforces this: it is the emblem of the indestructible quality of enlightened mind — the unchanging ground from which Medicine Buddha’s healing activity arises, undiminished by time or circumstance. Medicine Buddha Statue Features

Medicine Buddha sits in full lotus posture on a double lotus throne, his right hand in the Varada mudra — the gift-giving gesture, palm open and facing outward — holding the myrobalan plant between thumb and index finger. His left hand rests in the Dhyana mudra holding the lapis medicine bowl with its three nectars curing the three poisons of greed, ill will, and delusion at their root. He bears the traditional marks of enlightenment: the ushnisha, elongated earlobes, three neck lines, clockwise-curling hair coils, and the urna (third eye of wisdom) between the brows — the 32 marks of a great being rendered in the full gold of the fire gilded surface.

I bought a Medicine Buddha statue from Edwin about a month ago (August 2021). The statue is absolutely beautiful and the “real thing.” The main reason that I am writing this is to assure others who are thinking of buying a statue—or any other item—from Edwin’s website: Please do. You’ll be so glad you did. The statue I received is the very same one shown in the website photos. I also received excellent customer service and guidance from Edwin. I can assure others that they will receive the same. The website receives payment via credit card, but Edwin can arrange to receive payment in other ways such as an international wire transfer, which is the method I used. I had my statue consecrated and asked Edwin if the donation I was considering would be considered generous; He told me it would. I am thinking that this donation is not money; it’s goodwill and gratitude and a very real connection to others. I’m not a paid advocate for Edwin’s website. I’m just a very happy client who is grateful that I found it.
