This 11.5″ Shakyamuni Buddha statue is fully fire gilded in 24K gold, seated on a double lotus throne with fine hand-carved engravings throughout the robe and pedestal and a face hand-painted in real gold. At 11.5″ this is a classical altar centerpiece size — substantial enough to anchor a home shrine or Dharma room, compact enough to sit comfortably on a standard altar shelf without requiring a dedicated display space. The statue was handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master Newar artisans using the traditional lost wax sculpting method — the same technique used to supply Tibetan monasteries with sacred sculpture for centuries — and the 24K gold fire gilding will hold its luster indefinitely without tarnishing.
Handmade Shakyamuni Statue Mudras
The right hand displays the Bhumisparsha mudra — the earth-touching gesture, fingers extended downward from the right knee toward the ground — commemorating the moment under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya when Shakyamuni called the earth deity to witness his realization and Mara’s challenge was defeated. What followed that moment is as significant as the moment itself: having achieved enlightenment, the historical Buddha spent the next 45 years teaching the Dharma to sentient beings — beginning with the Four Noble Truths at Sarnath, the first turning of the Wheel of Dharma. Every Shakyamuni statue in Bhumisparsha mudra is therefore not only the image of a moment of realization but the image of what that realization made possible for all beings who came after.
His left hand rests in the lap in the Dhyana mudra — the meditation gesture, palm open and facing upward — with an alms bowl resting in the palm. The alms bowl is the emblem of Shakyamuni’s monastic renunciation and is understood to hold the three nectars that counteract the three poisons of greed, hatred, and ignorance — the same three poisons whose elimination the Four Noble Truths describe as the path to liberation.
