Wrathful Chana Dorje Sculpture Iconography
Vajrapani stands in an energetic warrior posture with his legs powerfully bent and his body turned as though moving directly into action. His raised right hand brandishes the vajra, or diamond-thunderbolt, the defining attribute from which his Sanskrit name is derived. The vajra represents indestructible enlightened power and the ability of awakened activity to overcome spiritual obstacles. In his left hand he holds the pasha, or lasso, traditionally associated with restraining and bringing obstructive forces under control.
His hand-painted face displays three wide-open eyes, sharply arched brows, exposed teeth, and the intense expression characteristic of wrathful Vajrapani. Above his forehead rises an elaborate five-skull crown. The five skulls symbolize the transformation of the five poisons — ignorance, attachment, anger, pride, and jealousy — into the five enlightened wisdoms. His flame-like hair rises behind the crown, reinforcing the sense that this is awakened energy made visible rather than uncontrolled aggression.
Removable Flaming Aureole and Detailed Gold Finish
A large removable aureole of curling flames surrounds Chana Dorje and forms one of the sculpture’s most impressive visual features. These flames represent pristine awareness consuming ignorance and obscuration. Flowing scarves curl outward from the body and echo the movement of the surrounding fire, while necklaces, bracelets, anklets, garment borders, and ornamental details enrich the central figure without diminishing his forceful posture. The lotus pedestal is likewise carefully sculpted and finished in gold, creating a stable visual foundation beneath the energetic deity.
The rear photographs reveal additional craftsmanship that is not immediately apparent from the front. The garments and ornaments continue around the sculpture, and a removable door is visible at the center of Vajrapani’s back for traditional consecration and filling materials.
