This refined 9.5-inch Manjushri Sculpture portrays Jampelyang, the Bodhisattva of Transcendent Wisdom, in one of his most recognizable Tibetan Buddhist forms. Handmade in Patan, Nepal, the sculpture is cast in copper alloy using the traditional lost-wax method and fire gilded in 24K gold. Manjushri sits in the full vajra posture upon an elegantly sculpted lotus pedestal, raising the Sword of Wisdom above his right shoulder while the Prajnaparamita Sutra is supported upon the lotus beside him. His youthful face is hand painted with 18K gold and natural pigments, while blue-black hair, an elaborate Bodhisattva crown, layered jewelry and long flowing scarves introduce contrasting details to the warm gold surface.

Manjushri Sculpture and the Sword of Wisdom

Manjushri, known as Jampelyang in Tibetan, embodies prajna, the transcendent wisdom that directly recognizes the nature of reality. His Sanskrit name is commonly translated as “Gentle Glory,” an appropriate expression of the union of serene appearance and penetrating insight represented by this sculpture. The raised sword is not a weapon of worldly violence. Instead, its blade represents discriminating wisdom cutting through ignorance, delusion and mistaken views. His left hand is held gracefully before his chest with the thumb and index finger joined in a teaching gesture. The same hand holds the stem rising toward the lotus beside his shoulder. Supported by the blossom is the Prajnaparamita Sutra, the Perfection of Wisdom scripture closely associated with Manjushri. Sword and scripture therefore complement one another: the sword expresses wisdom actively penetrating confusion, while the sacred text represents the teachings through which perfected wisdom is cultivated and transmitted.

Youthful Jampelyang and the Practice of Wisdom

This Manjushri Sculpture has the youthful appearance traditionally associated with Jampelyang. Rather than suggesting inexperience, eternal youth symbolizes a mind continually encountering reality with clarity, openness and freedom from hardened conceptual habits. The serene facial expression, slender proportions and carefully painted eyes reinforce this quality. His elaborate crown and jewelry identify him as a Bodhisattva, while the long ribbons and scarves curling outward from the body create graceful movement around the otherwise stable meditation posture.

Manjushri is especially associated with learning, contemplation, memory and eloquence. Handmade and Fire Gilded in Patan, Nepal

The sculpture was handmade by Newar artisans using the centuries-old lost-wax casting tradition of the Kathmandu Valley. After casting, the copper-alloy surface is refined by hand before being fire gilded in 24K gold. The photographs reveal particularly crisp detailing across Manjushri’s crown, necklaces, bracelets, arm ornaments and lotus pedestal, with additional engraved scrollwork visible across the shoulder garment. The face is separately hand painted with 18K gold and natural pigments to create the softer expression characteristic of fine Nepalese Buddhist sculpture. At the buyer’s request, selected areas of the crown and jewelry can also be embellished with turquoise and red coral gemstones before shipment.
