Wrathful Chana Dorje Statue Iconography

Vajrapani stands in a powerful warrior posture within a surrounding aureole of flames. His raised right hand brandishes the vajra, the diamond-thunderbolt whose indestructible nature symbolizes enlightened power capable of cutting through ignorance and obstacles. His left hand holds the pasha, or lasso, an attribute associated with restraining and bringing obstructive forces under control. The twisting lasso, streaming scarves, raised arm, and bent legs create a strong sensation of movement throughout the sculpture.

The hand-painted face displays Vajrapani’s unmistakable wrathful character. Three wide-open eyes communicate extraordinary awareness, while the exposed fangs and sharply arched brows give expression to fierce determination. Above the forehead is the traditional five-skull crown. The five skulls symbolize the transformation of the five poisons — ignorance, attachment, anger, pride, and jealousy — into the five enlightened wisdoms. His upward-sweeping hair reinforces the fiery character of the composition, while necklaces, bracelets, anklets, and other elaborate ornaments identify the deity as an enlightened Vajrayana figure rather than an ordinary protector.
