Our 19.5-inch Masterpiece Vajrapani Statue is an exceptionally elaborate interpretation of Chana Dorje, the wrathful embodiment of enlightened power in Tibetan Buddhism. Although handmade from copper alloy using the traditional lost-wax casting method, the sculpture was deliberately finished to evoke the warm visual character of a traditional Himalayan wooden carving. Layers of hand-painted ochre, muted gold, earthy red, green, blue and dark pigments soften the appearance of the metal and give the figure an unusually organic, sculptural presence. This distinctive wood-carving inspired polychrome treatment sets the statue apart from conventional gold-gilded Vajrapani sculptures while preserving the durability, weight and fine sculptural precision of copper-alloy casting.
Vajrapani Statue Iconography
The artisan has given extraordinary attention to Vajrapani’s wrathful expression. His three eyes glare outward beneath dramatically modeled brows, while his open mouth reveals fangs that emphasize his fierce enlightened activity. Vajrapani raises the vajra, or thunderbolt, dramatically in his right hand. This indestructible ritual implement identifies him as “Vajra in Hand” and symbolizes the irresistible power of awakened mind. His body is covered with exceptionally fine jewelry and serpent ornaments, while sweeping scarves move outward around the figure and reinforce the sculpture’s sense of motion. The iconography of wrathful Vajrapani expresses enlightened power directed toward subduing ignorance and obstacles rather than ordinary anger.
Wood-Carving Inspired Finish and Hand-Painted Details
One of the defining characteristics of this Masterpiece Vajrapani Statue is its unusual wood-carving inspired polychrome finish. Beneath the painted surface, the entire figure is handmade from copper alloy using the lost-wax casting method. Rather than emphasizing the reflective brilliance of the metal, however, the artisan has used warm earth tones and carefully layered pigments to give the sculpture the subdued visual richness associated with an elaborately painted wooden carving. Ochre, muted gold, deep red, green, blue and dark accents distinguish the deity’s body, ornaments, garments, lotus throne and surrounding flames, allowing the finely sculpted details to emerge gradually across the surface.
This treatment is particularly effective across Vajrapani’s powerful body and wrathful face, where subtle variations in color accentuate the modeled contours without overwhelming them with metallic brilliance. His jewelry, serpent ornaments, bracelets and anklets are picked out individually, while the sweeping scarves introduce softer pink and earth-toned accents around the figure. Vajrapani also wears a meticulously painted tiger skin around his waist. Viewed from the rear, the tiger’s expressive face appears prominently across the garment, surrounded by individually painted markings that suggest the texture of its fur. The result combines the intricate precision possible through copper-alloy casting with the warm, organic appearance the artisan intended to evoke from traditional carved and painted wood.
Masterpiece Vajrapani and 1000-Armed Avalokiteshvara
This statue makes an especially meaningful companion to 1000-Armed Avalokiteshvara. Vajrapani embodies enlightened power, while Avalokiteshvara embodies limitless compassion. Together they represent two members of the traditional Rigsum Gonpo, or Lords of the Three Families. Adding Manjushri completes the triad of Wisdom, Compassion and Power.
