Elaborate hand engraving gives this 13-inch Tibetan Dorje Sempa Statue much of its distinctive character. Rather than relying upon a plain gilded surface, the artisan has covered the lower robes, shoulder coverings and rear garments with tightly worked floral and scrolling patterns that become especially visible when the sculpture is viewed from the side or back. Vajrasattva sits upright in full lotus posture upon a substantial lotus throne, his slender proportions framed by flowing celestial scarves and an ornate Bodhisattva crown. The copper-alloy sculpture was handmade in Patan, Nepal using the traditional lost-wax casting method and fire gilded in 24K gold, while the serene face is separately hand painted with 18K gold and natural pigments. Blue-black hair gathered into a high topknot provides a strong visual contrast against the luminous gold finish.

Vajrasattva, known in Tibetan as Dorje Sempa, meaning “Diamond Being,” is immediately identified by the ritual implements held in his hands. His right hand raises the vajra upright before the heart, while his left hand supports the ghanta bell beside the lap. Within Vajrayana iconography, the vajra represents indestructible method or skillful means, while the bell represents transcendent wisdom. Their inseparable union expresses the integration necessary for awakening. The placement of these attributes has been carefully preserved in this sculpture, making the statue appropriate both as sacred altar imagery and as a visual representation of Vajrasattva practice. The figure wears the crown, necklaces, bracelets and arm ornaments of a celestial Bodhisattva. Fine engraving extends over the sleeves and garments covering the crossed legs, while the rear photographs reveal additional decorative work across the shoulder covering and lower robe. The lotus throne repeats the sculpture’s careful workmanship through raised lotus-petal carvings, a beaded upper border and engraved bands.
