This 6-inch Small Vajrasattva Sculpture presents Dorje Sempa, the “Diamond Being,” in a compact form suited to a personal shrine, meditation space or collection of Himalayan Buddhist art. Handmade in Nepal from copper alloy using the traditional lost-wax casting method, the sculpture is fire gilded in 24K gold, while the serene face is separately hand painted with 18K gold and natural pigments. Despite its modest dimensions, the statue preserves the essential iconography of Vajrasattva with carefully modeled jewelry, flowing scarves, an elaborate Bodhisattva crown and the ritual vajra and ghanta held in their traditional positions.
Small Vajrasattva Sculpture | Traditional Iconography
Vajrasattva holds the vajra upright before his heart in his right hand while his left hand rests near the hip holding the ghanta, or ritual bell. In Vajrayana symbolism, the vajra is associated with skillful means and indestructible enlightened activity, while the bell represents wisdom. Their union expresses the inseparability of wisdom and compassionate method on the path to awakening. The photographs show Vajrasattva seated in full lotus posture upon a single lotus throne. His youthful face has softly lowered eyes, delicately painted brows and red lips, framed by blue-black hair gathered into a high topknot. An elaborate crown rises above the forehead, while large earrings, necklaces, arm ornaments and bracelets identify his sambhogakaya appearance. Long celestial scarves curl outward around the body, giving movement to the otherwise meditative composition. Engraved borders embellish the garments around his crossed legs, while raised lotus petals and a beaded upper edge define the pedestal.
24K Gold Gilding and Optional Gemstone Adornments
The copper-alloy sculpture has been fire gilded in 24K gold, producing the warm, traditional finish visible throughout the body, robes, ornaments and lotus throne. The face is treated differently from the surrounding gilded surfaces: it is hand painted with 18K gold and natural pigments so that the artisan can precisely define the eyes, brows and lips. At the buyer’s request, genuine turquoise and red coral gemstones can also be embedded into suitable settings in the Bodhisattva crown and jewelry before shipment, creating a more richly adorned version of the same sculpture.
Vajrasattva and Guru Rinpoche | A Dzogchen Pairing
Vajrasattva and Guru Rinpoche form a particularly meaningful pairing for a Nyingma or Dzogchen shrine. Within traditional accounts of the Dzogchen lineage, Vajrasattva appears at the sambhogakaya level of transmission, while the teachings eventually pass through the great human masters and to Padmasambhava, who brought and established the Vajrayana tradition in Tibet. Guru Rinpoche therefore represents enlightened wisdom appearing through nirmanakaya activity in the human world. Placed together, the two statues can symbolically connect the subtle enlightened source of the transmission with the great tantric master who transmitted and established those teachings for practitioners.
