Dorje Shugden is the wrathful emanation of Manjushri — the same wisdom that Manjushri embodies in his serene, sword-wielding form appears here in its most forceful expression: fierce, unyielding, consuming all obstacles to realization with the fire of pristine awareness. His terrifying appearance is not a sign of malevolence but of method — the principle that some obstacles require forceful means to remove, and that compassion operating without obstruction can take any form necessary. He rides a snow lion with a green mane — the fearless mount of the Dharma — surrounded by a ring of flames. His three glaring eyes perceive past, present, and future simultaneously. The sword of wisdom in his right hand severs ignorance and conceptual obscuration. In his left hand he holds the heart jewel (snying po nor bu, the wish-fulfilling gem of spiritual attainment) near his chest, and the mongoose Nehulay rests on his left arm, symbolizing his power to bestow material and spiritual prosperity. He wears the golden domed hat of the Gelug school — the same yellow tradition as Je Tsongkhapa — marking him as the specific protector of the Gelug Dharma lineage.
