Handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master Newar artisans, the statue depicts Khadiravani Tara — Tara of the Khadira Acacia Forest — in a graceful form suited to a substantial home altar, Dharma center or dedicated meditation room. Selected areas of the copper-alloy sculpture are fire gilded in 24K pure gold, including the upper body, crown, jewelry, lotus flowers and ornamental details, while the flowing garments and portions of the throne retain a warm antiquated copper finish. This deliberate contrast allows the fine sculptural details to remain clearly visible while giving Tara a luminous central presence.

The face of this Tibetan Green Tara sculpture is traditionally hand painted rather than fire gilded, allowing the artisan to define the gently arched eyebrows, contemplative eyes, urna and softly colored lips with greater precision. Tibetan Green Tara Sculpture Features

The most recognizable feature of this Tibetan Green Tara sculpture is her lalitasana, or royal-ease posture. Her left leg remains folded inward in meditation while the right leg extends downward, with the foot supported by a separate lotus blossom. This balanced pose communicates two complementary qualities: the inward stability of meditative wisdom and the outward readiness of compassionate action. Tara is composed, but she is not remote; her extended leg suggests that she can rise immediately to assist those who call upon her. Her lowered right hand displays the Varada mudra, the gesture of generosity, blessings and compassionate giving. The palm opens toward the viewer, expressing Tara’s willingness to grant assistance and favorable conditions for spiritual practice. Her raised left hand gently holds the stem of an utpala lotus between the fingers. The hand resembles a teaching gesture, but its primary iconographic function here is to support the lotus stem rather than to display an independent mudra.

Two open lotus blossoms rise beside Tara’s shoulders, forming a symmetrical floral frame around the crown and face. The flowers symbolize the awakened qualities that can emerge unstained from the difficult conditions of samsara, just as a lotus grows from muddy water and blossoms above its surface. Flowing celestial scarves pass around the arms and descend in curling ribbons beside the throne, giving movement to the otherwise tranquil composition.

The lower garments are covered with finely worked floral and scrolling designs, and the decorative treatment continues around the reverse of the figure. Tara sits upon a substantial double lotus throne with strongly modeled petals, a beaded upper rim and an ornamented lower border. These carefully finished areas demonstrate the traditional lost wax method used to create the sculpture, in which the original wax model is destroyed during casting and the completed copper-alloy figure is subsequently refined, engraved and finished by hand.

Khadiravani Tara and the Forest of Enlightened Activity

Khadiravani means “Tara of the Khadira Forest,” referring to her association with a sacred forest of acacia trees. The forest setting is especially appropriate for Green Tara because it conveys growth, vitality and ceaseless activity. In Buddhist practice, her compassionate action is not understood as impulsive or uncontrolled. It arises from perfected wisdom: Tara perceives what is needed and responds without the delay created by fear, attachment or self-interest.

Her mantra, Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha, is recited by devotees seeking protection, courage and the removal of obstacles.
