This exceptional 13″ Shakyamuni Buddha sculpture was handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by a master Newar artisan using the traditional lost wax casting method. The sculpture features a striking combination of brilliant 24K fire gilding and a rich antiquated copper finish, creating a beautiful contrast that highlights the serene form of the Historical Buddha. The face, chest, hands and exposed skin are richly gilded while the monastic robes retain their deep reddish-brown oxidized finish, allowing the engraved robe borders and lotus pedestal to stand out with remarkable clarity. Every surface reflects generations of Himalayan metalworking tradition, making this sculpture equally suited for meditation rooms, Buddhist shrines or fine art collections.
Unlike crowned Buddha images that represent celestial manifestations, this Shakyamuni Buddha sculpture portrays Siddhartha Gautama as the enlightened teacher following his awakening beneath the Bodhi Tree. His tightly curled hair rises to the ushnisha, symbolizing supreme wisdom, while the elongated earlobes recall his former princely life before renunciation. A delicately painted urna appears between the eyebrows, representing enlightened perception. The peaceful facial expression is completed by traditional hand painting using natural pigments and gold, bringing warmth and lifelike character to the sculpture.
Shakyamuni Buddha is the historical founder of Buddhism and the source of the teachings preserved throughout every Buddhist tradition. His enlightenment revealed the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, providing a practical method for overcoming suffering and attaining liberation. Historical Buddha Mudras and Meanings
This Shakyamuni Buddha sculpture depicts the famous Bhumisparsha Mudra, the Earth-Touching Gesture. His right hand extends gracefully over the knee with the fingertips reaching toward the earth, commemorating the moment beneath the Bodhi Tree when he called the Earth Goddess to witness his enlightenment and triumph over Mara. This remains the single most recognizable gesture of the Historical Buddha and symbolizes unwavering determination, spiritual victory and the realization of perfect wisdom. His left hand rests peacefully in the lap in the Dhyana Mudra, holding the traditional monk’s alms bowl. The bowl symbolizes renunciation, humility and complete contentment with whatever is freely offered. Within Buddhist symbolism it also represents the vessel of Dharma, capable of transforming the three poisons of greed, hatred and ignorance into wisdom, compassion and liberation. Together, the Earth-Touching and Meditation mudras perfectly express both the Buddha’s enlightenment and his lifelong teaching mission.
The sculpture sits in the full lotus posture upon a beautifully proportioned double lotus pedestal finished in matching fire gilding and antiquated copper. Fine engraved floral borders decorate the robe, while the flowing folds naturally follow the contours of the seated figure. Even the reverse of the statue displays elegant simplicity, with the robe draping naturally across the shoulders and back, demonstrating the exceptional attention to detail characteristic of master Newar craftsmanship.
