This 9-inch oxidized Green Tara sculpture presents Jetsun Dolma in an elegant antiquated copper finish that emphasizes the graceful modeling and intricate hand-finished details of traditional Himalayan Buddhist art. Known as Arya Tara and Khadiravani Tara in Sanskrit traditions, Green Tara embodies enlightened compassion expressed through immediate, fearless activity. The sculpture is handmade from copper alloy in Patan, Nepal using the traditional lost wax casting method, with a warm oxidized surface that accentuates the crown, jewelry, engraved garments, lotus flowers and dramatic celestial ribbons surrounding her body.
Oxidized Green Tara Sculpture Iconography
Green Tara sits in lalitasana, the posture of royal ease that immediately distinguishes her dynamic form. Her left leg remains folded upon the throne while the right leg extends downward, with the foot projecting toward the front of the lotus pedestal. Unlike the fully meditative posture of many peaceful Buddhist deities, Tara appears prepared to rise and respond to beings in need. This readiness for compassionate action is central to Green Tara’s meaning and enlightened activity.
Her lowered right hand displays the Varada mudra, the gesture of generosity and compassionate giving. The raised left hand forms Tara’s characteristic gesture beside the heart. Lotus stems rise alongside both arms and culminate in sculpted utpala blossoms beside her shoulders. These flowers visually frame Tara’s upper body while symbolizing the purity of awakened wisdom arising unstained from samsara. Her peaceful facial expression, third eye, elaborate Bodhisattva crown, necklaces, earrings, arm ornaments and carefully arranged hair complete the traditional iconographic presentation.
Celestial Ribbons and Hand-Engraved Details
Among the most distinctive features of this oxidized Green Tara sculpture are the long celestial ribbons flowing outward from behind her shoulders. They descend alongside the lotus stems before curling dramatically around both sides of her seated form. Their open, sweeping curves give the composition a sense of movement appropriate to Tara’s association with swift enlightened activity. The rear view clearly reveals how these ribbons extend independently around her body rather than forming an aureole.
The lower garments provide another focal point. Fine scrolling and foliate engravings cover the fabric across Tara’s folded legs, complemented by raised borders and ornamental jewelry. Beneath her is a broad single lotus throne with a continuous row of sculpted lotus petals and beaded edging. The dark brown antiquated finish settles naturally into recessed details, increasing the visual depth of the engravings and relief work while retaining warmer copper highlights across the raised surfaces.
Green Tara – Swift Liberation from Fear
Jetsun Dolma is traditionally invoked for protection, courage and assistance in overcoming obstacles. Tibetan teachings particularly associate Tara with liberation from the Eight Great Fears, understood both as external dangers and as representations of inner afflictions. Their related antiquated finishes create visual harmony, while the two deities share an especially close doctrinal relationship. Chenrezig, or Avalokiteshvara, embodies the universal compassion of all Buddhas, while Tara represents compassion becoming swift enlightened action. Tibetan tradition also closely associates Tara’s origin with Avalokiteshvara, making the pairing appropriate for an altar devoted to compassion, protection and liberation.
