This exceptional 12.5-inch Oxidized Copper Shakyamuni Statue portrays the Historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, at the defining moment of his enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree. Handmade in Patan, Nepal from copper alloy using the traditional lost-wax casting method, the sculpture is distinguished by its deep antiquated-oxidized finish and remarkably extensive hand engraving. Rather than relying upon gold gilding for visual richness, the artisan has used the natural warmth of the copper alloy, darkened recesses and softly burnished highlights to emphasize the modeling and extraordinary surface detail.
The workmanship is particularly impressive across Shakyamuni’s monastic robes. Elaborate scrolling botanical patterns cover the garments over the shoulders, arms and crossed legs, while the reverse reveals an equally elaborate field of engraved floral medallions and curling foliage. Contrasting ornamental borders trace the edges of the robe and shoulder covering. This unusually complete decoration makes the sculpture rewarding to view from every direction while retaining the calm dignity appropriate to the Historical Buddha.
Oxidized Copper Shakyamuni Statue Iconography
Shakyamuni sits in vajrasana, the full lotus posture, with his right arm extending naturally across the knee. His fingertips reach downward in Bhumisparsha Mudra, the Earth-Touching Gesture commemorating Siddhartha’s victory over Mara immediately before enlightenment. When Mara challenged his accumulated merit and right to awakening, Siddhartha called the earth to witness the countless virtuous actions of his previous lives. The gesture consequently represents unwavering determination, the overcoming of delusion and the realization of enlightenment. His left hand rests peacefully in his lap and supports the traditional monastic alms bowl. Together, the two hands balance realization with renunciation: the earth-touching right hand recalls the decisive accomplishment of awakening, while the alms bowl recalls the simple mendicant life adopted after Siddhartha abandoned royal privilege. The gently lowered eyes reinforce the statue’s contemplative character.
Traditional Marks of the Historical Buddha
Several identifying characteristics of Buddhahood are carefully modeled into the sculpture. Tightly arranged hair curls rise toward the prominent ushnisha, while an urna appears between the brows. Shakyamuni’s elongated earlobes recall the heavy royal ornaments worn by Prince Siddhartha before his renunciation, and three horizontal lines encircle the neck. Beneath the figure is a substantial single lotus throne. A continuous register of rounded petals surrounds the pedestal below a finely beaded upper rim, while engraved scrolling ornament decorates the lower base. The dark oxidation settles naturally within these recessed details, increasing their definition against the warmer raised copper surfaces.
