Our world-class Amitayus statue portrays one of the three Tibetan deities of long life. Amitayus is a Sanskrit word that translates into English as “infinite life,” and devotees are encouraged to recite the Amitayus mantra with complete faith in his practice — in doing so, they may be granted the blessings of good health and longevity. The Amitayus mantra is “Om A Ma Ra Ni Dzi Wan Ti Ye Soha.”
The ambrosia vessel rests on his upturned palms, filled with the elixir of immortality known as amrita in Sanskrit or dutsi in Tibetan, its lid rising into an ornamental sprouting plume. Learn more about the Amitabha longevity attribute in our complete guide to Amitayus Long Life Practice and Meaning.
This Amitayus statue depicts him displaying the Dhyana Mudra, the meditation gesture, sitting in full lotus pose on a single lotus pedestal ringed with bold petals and beaded rims. Although Amitayus is a fully enlightened Buddha, he is depicted in the jeweled crown and ornaments of a Bodhisattva — the traditional presentation of his sambhogakaya, or celestial, form. His face is delicately hand painted, with light blue arched brows, the urna between them, and lips finished in red, while his blue-black hair falls in painted tresses past both shoulders and gathers into a topknot above the crown. Flowing ribboned scarves loop around his elbows and flare into swirls at either side of his knees, and the robe carries intricate engravings throughout — the gold glittering with the allure of longevity for faithful followers of Amitayus.
