A Mahakala is a form of Dharmapala in Vajrayana Buddhism who serves as a protector of the faith. Specifically, our Bernagchen Mahakala statue is a protector of the Karmapa in the Karma Kagyu school. Read more about Bernagchen Mahakala, the Black Cloaked protector of the Karma Kagyu lineage, in our complete Mahakala statues guide.

Descriptions of the deity include a stout body, flaming hair, 3 eyes and a crown adorned with human skulls. Additionally, he stands inside of the flames of pristine awareness. Beneath the feet of our Bernagchen Mahakala statue are two human corpses. The corpses signify the death of negativity. Negativity has been removed along with all of its roots, therefore it can never come back to life.

Bernagchen Mahakala Statue Features:

In his right hand he holds the kartika flaying knife which severs the hindrances of hatred, greed and ignorance. In his left hand he holds the kapala skull cup filled with blood and brain matter. However, it seems unimaginable that a Buddhist deity would consume something so vile. Nonetheless, this is libation vessel that is a common feature of Mahakala statues and also a ritual gift given to Dharmapala deities.

Our Mahakala sculpture was hand crafted by the world class artisans of Patan, Nepal. They use the lost wax method which is the best for producing fine statue details. As a result, Nepali statues have been the preferred choice of the Tibetan monasteries for many centuries. When you purchase one of our statues, rest assured you have procured a world class sculpture.
