Our 8.75″ Aparmita statue — known in Tibetan as Tsepame and in Sanskrit as Amitayus, the Buddha of Long Life — sits in full lotus position depicting the Dhyana Mudra, the meditation gesture. Resting on his upturned palms is his defining attribute: the ambrosia vase, or kalasha, filled with the nectar of immortality, its lid crowned with an ornamental plume of sprouting nectar. Long ribboned scarves loop around both elbows and flare outward into stylized swirls at either side of his knees — a hallmark of Newari Sambhogakaya sculpture that lends the piece a sense of celestial movement. Amitayus is adorned in the full crown and jewelry of a Bodhisattva: a five-pointed crown set below his gathered topknot, large circular earrings, layered beaded necklaces, armbands, and wristlets, all rendered in an antiquated finish using oxidized copper alloy that gives the statue the presence of a centuries-old monastery piece.

8.75″ Aparmita Statue Features

Our Nepali master artisans created this beautiful 8.75″ Aparmita statue with the jewelry and crown of a Bodhisattva. At the request of the buyer, we would be happy to adorn the crown and jewels of the statue with turquoise or red coral stones — at no extra charge, our skilled artisans can embellish the statue with these decorations before delivery.

The colors displayed by the stones carry special meanings in Tibetan Buddhism. The blue lotus represents the purity of Nirvana, and this is reflected in turquoise, a combination of blue and green: blue represents the purity of the Buddhas, while green represents their readiness to act. Red coral, in turn, echoes the color of Amitabha’s Buddha family, to which Amitayus belongs.

In Tibetan Buddhism, Aparmita is one of the three long life deities alongside White Tara and Namgyalma, and he is the figure most closely associated with longevity practice. Amitayus statues are used in longevity rituals performed in the hopes of prolonging life, removing obstacles to practice, and creating the conditions for an auspicious rebirth. As part of the traditional longevity ritual, a replica of Aparmita’s ambrosia vase is filled with wine, which is then consecrated and shared among devotees. Special long-life pills, symbolically recreated from buttered dough, are consumed alongside the wine.
