The Mahakala class of deities has several variations including 2 armed, 4 armed and 6 armed embodiments. Black Cloaked Mahakala is a two armed version of Mahakala. Additionally, the sculpture includes a stout body, flaming hair, 3 glaring eyes, crown adorned with five human skulls and he stands inside of the flames of pristine awareness.

Beneath the feet of our Black Cloaked Mahakala sculpture is a human corpse that signifies the death of negativity. As a result, the roots of the defilements has been removed and can never come back to life. In his right hand he holds the kartika flaying knife which severs the delusion of duality. Additionally, in his left hand he holds the kapala skull cup filled with human blood and brain matter.

A Mahakala is a form of Dharmapala in Vajrayana Buddhism who serves as a Dharma protector. Specifically, our two armed Black Cloaked Mahakala sculpture is a protector of the Karmapa in the Karma Kagyu school.
