Warm oxidized copper and luminous gold create the defining character of this 8-inch Manjushri Jampelyang Sculpture. Rather than covering the entire figure in a uniform finish, the artisan has used 24K gold fire gilding selectively across Manjushri’s upper body, arms, Bodhisattva ornaments and sacred attributes while allowing rich reddish-brown copper tones to remain visible across the folded legs and portions of the throne. The result gives the sculpture greater visual depth and makes its iconographic details immediately readable. Handmade in Patan, Nepal from copper alloy using the traditional lost-wax casting method, the statue is completed with a separately hand-painted 18K gold face and natural pigments. At 8 inches high and 6 inches wide, it is a compact but substantial representation of Jampelyang, the Tibetan name for Manjushri, “Gentle Glory” and Bodhisattva of Transcendent Wisdom.

Manjushri Jampelyang Sculpture | Sword and Scripture of Wisdom

Manjushri’s right arm rises dramatically beside his head, carrying the Sword of Wisdom. This celebrated attribute represents penetrating insight capable of cutting through ignorance, confusion and mistaken perception. The sword is therefore not an emblem of physical violence but of discriminating wisdom. His left hand is held before the chest in Vitarka mudra, the gesture associated with teaching, reasoning and the communication of Dharma. From the same side rises an elegant utpala stem supporting a blossom and the Prajnaparamita scripture, connecting Manjushri directly with the Mahayana teachings on the Perfection of Wisdom. Learn more about these attributes in our guide to Manjushri’s Sword of Wisdom and sacred symbolism.

Two-Tone Himalayan Craftsmanship

The photographs reveal a particularly effective balance between gilded and antiquated surfaces. Manjushri wears an elaborate Bodhisattva crown with raised scrolling ornament, accompanied by large earrings, necklaces, bracelets and decorative arm bands. Blue-black hair provides contrast around the gilded face and crown. Long celestial scarves sweep outward around the torso, creating open curling forms on either side of the seated figure. The crossed legs remain predominantly oxidized copper, while gilded garment borders and the surrounding platform establish a visual transition into the pedestal. Manjushri sits in full lotus posture on a single lotus throne whose broad oxidized lotus petals are accented with gilded inner forms, producing another deliberate contrast between dark copper and gold.

Turquoise and red coral gemstones may also be embedded into suitable settings in the crown and jewelry upon request. These optional additions can introduce restrained color while preserving the distinctive antiquated and gilded character already established by the artisan.

Manjushri and Shakyamuni Buddha | A Wisdom Pairing

This Manjushri is especially well matched with our 8-inch handmade Shakyamuni Buddha statue. Shakyamuni represents the historical Buddha whose enlightenment and teachings established the Buddhist path, while Manjushri personifies the transcendent wisdom through which those teachings are understood and realized. Displayed together, the pairing can therefore express the relationship between the Buddha’s awakening and the wisdom that comprehends the Dharma. Their identical 8-inch height also gives the two sculptures practical visual compatibility on a home altar, meditation shrine or study space.

Manjushri Jampelyang Sculpture | Filling and Consecration

For practitioners preparing the sculpture for devotional use, traditional filling and consecration may be arranged in Kathmandu, Nepal before shipment. Appropriate sacred materials and mantra rolls can be placed within the hollow copper-alloy statue before it is blessed according to Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Further information is available in our guide to Buddha statue filling, blessing and consecration in Nepal.

Custom Tibetan Buddhist Statues

Collectors, practitioners and Dharma centers may also commission custom Tibetan Buddhist statues handmade in Nepal. A Manjushri sculpture can be ordered in different dimensions or with a fully gilded, antiquated copper, partly gilded or other traditional finish. Custom commissions can also be coordinated with another altar figure such as Shakyamuni so the statues share complementary proportions, throne dimensions and artistic treatment while retaining the correct iconography of each deity.
