Rather than relying on heavy surface ornamentation, the composition draws attention upward from the broad lotus throne through Manjushri’s slender torso to the sword held prominently above his right shoulder. An ornate Bodhisattva crown, large circular earrings, necklaces and flowing celestial scarves frame the serene figure, while blue-black hair and painted facial details introduce subtle color against the luminous gold finish. Handmade in Patan, Nepal from copper alloy using the traditional lost-wax casting method, the statue is fire gilded in 24K gold, with the face separately hand painted in 18K gold and natural pigments.
Handmade Manjushri Sculpture | Sword and Prajnaparamita
Manjushri, whose Sanskrit name means “Gentle Glory,” embodies prajna, the transcendent wisdom that directly recognizes the nature of reality. His raised right hand firmly grasps the sword of wisdom, its broad blade extending above the crown. The sword does not signify physical aggression; it represents penetrating insight capable of cutting through ignorance, confusion and mistaken views.
His left hand forms Vitarka mudra, with the thumb and index finger joined while holding the stem of an utpala lotus. The stem rises beside his left shoulder to a blossom supporting the Prajnaparamita Sutra, the Perfection of Wisdom scripture. Sword and scripture therefore express complementary dimensions of Manjushri’s wisdom: direct realization and its transmission through Buddhist teaching. Manjushri sits in full lotus posture upon an individual lotus throne. A beaded upper border runs around the pedestal above a continuous row of raised lotus-petal carvings, while additional sculpted flourishes extend from the sides. The symmetrical seated posture provides a calm visual foundation for the dynamic diagonal movement created by the raised sword.
