This exceptional 13.75-inch Tibetan Shakyamuni Statue presents the historical Buddha in a refined low-luster 24K gold finish that gives the sculpture a warm, mature radiance rather than a highly polished appearance. Handmade in Patan, Nepal from copper alloy using the traditional lost-wax casting method, the statue is fire gilded in 24K gold, while the serene face is separately hand painted with 18K gold and natural pigments. The photographs reveal an unusually sophisticated level of surface finishing: nearly the entire monastic robe is covered with painstakingly engraved scrolling foliage, repeating geometric panels and finely defined ornamental borders, making the sculpture particularly impressive when viewed from the rear as well as the front.
Tibetan Shakyamuni Statue Iconography
Shakyamuni, the “Sage of the Shakya Clan,” is the historical Gautama Buddha whose enlightenment and teachings established the Buddhist Dharma of our present age. He is seated in full lotus posture, or vajrasana, displaying the Bhumisparsha mudra. His right arm descends naturally over the right knee, with the fingertips directed toward the earth. This earth-touching gesture recalls the decisive moment beneath the Bodhi tree when Siddhartha called the earth to witness his accumulated merit as Mara challenged his attainment. It has consequently become one of the most recognizable symbols of unshakable realization in Buddhist art.
His left hand rests open in the Dhyana mudra, supporting a carefully sculpted lidded alms bowl. The bowl recalls Shakyamuni’s renunciation of princely privilege and adoption of the mendicant life. Above, tightly arranged blue-black curls rise into the prominent ushnisha and terminate in a small gilded finial. The elongated earlobes, urna between the brows and three graceful neck folds complete the familiar physical characteristics associated with an enlightened Buddha.
Master-Level Engraving and 24K Gold Finish
The craftsmanship of this statue is most apparent in the robe. The front combines broad areas of softly glowing gold with extraordinarily fine engraved textile patterns. Scroll-shaped borders follow the neckline, sash and sleeve edges, while the garment covering the left shoulder, torso and crossed legs is filled with individually engraved floral and foliate motifs. From behind, these designs become even more elaborate: rectangular textile panels are densely filled with curling botanical ornament and surrounded by precisely engraved borders. Even the rear of the lotus throne carries finely worked decorative patterns, demonstrating that the artisan treated the sculpture as a complete three-dimensional devotional object rather than concentrating workmanship only on the front.
The 24K fire gilding is intentionally finished with a rich low luster. Instead of producing a mirror-like surface, the treatment allows the engraved lines to remain prominent while creating gentle tonal variations across the gold. Genuine turquoise and red coral gemstones can also be embedded upon request, allowing the sculpture to be further personalized while preserving its traditional iconography.
