Our authentic 14.5″ Bhumisparsha Buddha statue (Shakyamuni Buddha) was handmade in Patan, Nepal, in the eloquent style of lost wax casting. The sculptor took special care with the intricate engravings: a scrollwork-covered shawl drapes over both shoulders, framing the mirror-polished chest, while a key-fret patterned sash gathers at the waist in a knotted tie and the engraving flows down across the lap. The statue features a gold painted face with lifelike expression — deep blue-black brows matching the blue-tinted curls of his hair, the urna between them, and lips finished in red. He depicts the Bhumisparsha, or “earth touching,” mudra, and holds the quintessential lidded alms bowl in the palm of his left hand, with the ushnisha topknot, elongated earlobes, three neck lines, and right-turning hair coils completing the traditional presentation.
Handmade Shakyamuni Buddha Statue
The full lotus pose is a sign of supreme virtue — it is also known as the vajra pose, from the Sanskrit word meaning “diamond” or “thunderbolt,” making this sitting posture a symbol of unshakable moral resolve. He sits on a single lotus pedestal ringed with rounded petals above a finely engraved leaf band at the foot.
The urna, or third eye of wisdom, is depicted between the brows. A statue bearing the urna signifies a fully enlightened Buddha or high Bodhisattva: it represents transcendent wisdom, superior to mundane knowledge, acquired over many Bodhisattva lifetimes.
Shakyamuni Buddha was born a prince of the Shakya Kingdom in the 6th century BCE, and his statues carry echoes of that royal past — most visibly the elongated earlobes, stretched by the heavy earrings he wore before his renunciation. The ushnisha topknot and three neck lines, however, are marks of his enlightenment rather than his rank: both are counted among the traditional 32 marks of a fully awakened being.
