This 14.5″ Rahula statue is finished in an antiquated treatment with silver plated details — the dark oxidized copper body contrasting with the silver plating of the flame mandorla accents, the naga lower body base, and the key ornamental elements — with a triangular lotus base in silver. The fourth thumbnail shows the most distinctive feature of this statue: the upper body is covered with eyes — carved across the torso in dense detail — representing Rahula’s total omniscient awareness of all planetary movements, astrological configurations, and cosmic forces simultaneously. The statue was handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master Newar artisans using the traditional lost wax sculpting method with fine hand-carved detail throughout the extraordinarily complex stacked composition.

Rahula (gZa’ Ra Hu la) is the eclipse deity and one of the most powerful Dharmapalas of the Nyingma tradition — a being whose mandate is the protection of Vajrayana practitioners, and specifically those who have taken formal samaya vows and committed to purifying their moral obscurations. His practice is invoked when practitioners face obstacles arising from broken or weakened vows, adverse astrological configurations, naga-caused disturbances, or the hostile planetary forces that the Tibetan astrological tradition recognizes as capable of disrupting spiritual practice. Despite his ferocious appearance, Rahula is understood in the Nyingma tradition as a Bodhisattva — his terrifying form is the expression of unwavering compassion deployed without compromise against the forces that obstruct practitioners from fulfilling their commitment to the Dharma. His iconography is rooted in the Indian deity of the same name who was said to cause solar and lunar eclipses by swallowing the celestial bodies — a mythological basis that the Tibetan tradition transformed into a sophisticated cosmological protector whose dominion extends over all nine planetary spheres.

Rahula Statue Features

Rahula’s primary face — his own — appears at the level of the torso, surrounded by the eyes that cover his body. Above it, nine heads are stacked vertically, each representing one of the nine planets of the Tibetan astrological system that he has swallowed or “eclipsed” — an expression of his complete mastery over the cosmic forces that govern the astrological environment of all beings. At the very crown, the head of a raven presides — the raven being the bird of omniscient wisdom and ill omen, whose presence signals the eclipse energies that Rahula commands. The other heads wear five-skull crowns, the skulls representing the five aggregates and their transmutation into the wisdom of emptiness. His four arms hold a drawn bow and arrow in two hands — the arrow symbolizing the precision of insight wisdom that penetrates and destroys the causes of vow-breaking — with the remaining hands holding additional implements. His lower body is that of a coiled naga, expressing his lordship over the serpent realm and the elemental forces that nagas govern. The ring of flames surrounding the composition represents pristine awareness consuming all obstructions.
