This 15″ Rahula statue is fire gilded in 24K gold with hand painted face details in red and copper across all nine heads, mounted within a fully gilded flame mandorla on a square lotus throne. The flame mandorla frame is removable, allowing the statue to be displayed with or without the halo depending on altar space. The body of the statue — visible in the back thumbnail — is covered with carved eyes across every surface, Rahula’s defining iconographic feature and the visual expression of his total omniscient awareness of all planetary movements and cosmic disturbances. The statue was handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master Newar artisans using the traditional lost wax sculpting method with fine hand-carved detail throughout the complex stacked multi-headed composition.

Rahula (gZa’ Ra Hu la) is the eclipse deity and Dharmapala of the Nyingma tradition — a Buddha or Bodhisattva who has taken on a wrathful form to act as the unconditional defender of the Dharma and protector of Buddhist practitioners from the obstacles that impede spiritual realization. His origins lie in the Indian mythological figure of Rahu, the celestial being said to cause solar and lunar eclipses by swallowing the sun and moon — a tradition that Tibetan Buddhism absorbed and transformed into a fully developed cosmic protector deity whose dominion extends over all nine planetary spheres. Despite the ferocity of his appearance, Rahula acts exclusively from the ground of enlightened compassion: the terrifying form is not his identity but his method, directed without exception toward the benefit of the beings he protects. Rahula Statue Features

Rahula’s own face appears at the torso level, surrounded by the eyes that cover his body. Above it, nine heads are stacked vertically — each representing one of the nine planets he has swallowed and eclipsed, each face bearing three glaring eyes and fearsome fangs. At the crown, a raven’s head presides as the emblem of his omniscient and ominous awareness. All nine heads wear skull crowns and large hanging earrings. His four arms carry a specific set of attributes: two hold a drawn bow and arrow — the arrow of insight wisdom that destroys the causes of vow-breaking with precision — while the other two hold a snake lasso for binding and capturing harmful forces, and a makara staff, the makara being the mythical sea creature of Indian and Buddhist iconography associated with the depths of the cosmic ocean. He wears a necklace of heads around his neck. His lower body is that of a coiled naga (serpent), expressing his lordship over the serpent realm and the elemental forces nagas govern. The ring of flames declares his identity as pristine awareness consuming all obstructions without remainder.
