This 9-inch Oxidized Copper Amitayus Statue portrays Amitayus Buddha, also known as Aparmita, “The Boundless One,” and in Tibetan as Tsepame, “Infinite Life.” Handmade in Patan, Nepal, from copper alloy using the traditional lost-wax casting method, the sculpture has been given a rich antiquated oxidized finish rather than gold gilding. Warm reddish-brown copper tones extend across the body, garments and throne, while darker oxidation settles naturally into recessed details. This contrast beautifully reveals the intricate engraving and gives the sculpture the dignified appearance associated with an older Himalayan monastery image.

Amitayus sits in the full vajra posture with both hands resting in Dhyana Mudra upon his lap. Supported by his upturned palms is the longevity vase containing amrita, the nectar of immortal life, his most recognizable iconographic attribute. The vessel rises prominently before the torso beneath his layered necklaces. Amitayus wears the elaborate ornaments of a celestial Buddha, including a five-pointed crown, large earrings, necklaces, armbands and bracelets. His dark hair rises into a high topknot above the crown, while long celestial scarves loop around his arms before curling outward beside the lotus throne.
