Symbolism Jetsun Dolma Sculpture
Jetsun Dolma’s right hand is depicting the Varada “gift giving” mudra. This venerable mudra indicates that she is always ready to assist sentient life. As a further indication of her dedication her right leg is partially extended. Indeed, Jetsun Dolma is always ready to spring forth and assist her devotees.
Furthermore, her left hand is depicting the protection mudra, also known as the “Abhaya” mudra. She encourages her devotees to be fearless and to go forth and try new things. Jetsun Dolma wants her followers to be free from dogmatic beliefs and embrace her versatile attributes.
Our Jetsun Dolma sculpture is sculpted with two lotus flowers, one growing over each shoulder. The lotus flower is very symbolic in Buddhist beliefs. This is because the lotus rises off of the muddy pond bottom to blossom above the murky pond water. It is here in the clean air and sunshine that its true beauty can be appreciated. As a result, the lotus blossom is seen as a metaphor for a devotee who rises above the sea of suffering to reap the rewards of Nirvana.
