Our 17″ 1000 armed Avalokiteshvara sculpture is a classic depiction of the most dramatic form of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, handmade in Patan, Nepal and fire gilded in 24K gold. The standing figure is framed by a red-rimmed repoussé aureole, hand hammered with scrolling foliage and beaded borders, its pigmented ground glowing between the thousand radiating hands. The aureole is a separate, removable frame: the sculpture stands 14″ on its own and 17″ with the frame in place, making this the most compact way to bring the thousand armed form onto a home shrine.
The eleven heads rise in crowned tiers of serene, gold painted faces with lapis-blue hair, surmounted by the painted wrathful face of Vajrapani and crowned at the summit by the peaceful head of Amitabha Buddha, his spiritual father. His two principal hands press together at the heart in reverence, while the lower right hand opens in the Varada mudra of generosity. Every face is hand painted in gold with fine detail, from the arched brows to the serene, downcast eyes. Robed in a finely engraved dhoti, the figure stands on a double lotus above a stepped throne carved with animal figures and a sculpted cloth drape.

Avalokiteshvara is known as the Bodhisattva of Compassion because he vowed to forego final Buddhahood until every sentient being was freed from suffering. Laboring across countless ages, he saw that beings he had liberated fell back into their old destructive patterns. Overwhelmed by the enormity of his vow, his body shattered into thousands of pieces.
Amitabha Buddha restored him with a far more powerful form: 1000 arms and 11 heads, allowing him to act everywhere at once and perceive the cries of the world in every direction.
