This beautiful 8″ Padmapani statue, or Chenrezig (Tibetan Avalokiteshvara), was hand crafted in Patan, Nepal using the traditional lost wax casting method and fully gilded in 24K gold. The statue features the intricately handmade jewelry and crown of a bodhisattva — tall flame-shaped crown leaves with ribbons curling at the temples. At the request of the buyer, we would be happy to adorn the crown and jewels of the statue with turquoise or red coral stones. At no extra charge, the skilled artisan can embellish the statue with these special decorations before delivery.

Tibetan Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig) Statue Special Features

Our handmade statue is depicted with 4 arms. In front of his chest, he has two hands pressed together holding the “cintamani” wish fulfilling jewel. Additionally, in his upper right hand he is holding the mala beads between his thumb and index finger. This is because Chenrezig is constantly reciting his mantra to relieve the suffering of sentient life.

His two names reveal his nature. Chenrezig is the Tibetan term for Avalokiteshvara, meaning “the one who always looks upon all beings with the eye of compassion,” while Padmapani is his Sanskrit name, meaning “lotus holder.” Padmapani was his original form in the non-Tantric Mahayana Buddhism of India, depicted with two arms and an utpala lotus, before Tibetan Buddhism transformed him into the four-armed Chenrezig. Therefore, in his upper left hand he holds the stem of a blossoming lotus flower: in the natural environment the lotus rises above the murky pond to blossom in the clean air and sunshine, and metaphorically the devotee rises above the “sea of samsara” to achieve enlightenment.

This handmade statue sits in full lotus pose on a double lotus pedestal — two tiers of carved petals beneath a finely ribbed seat rim, with an engraved foliage band circling the base and the engraved hem of his robe spilling over the seat’s edge. Padmapani is also depicted with the third eye of wisdom between his brows, indicating a high level bodhisattva with the ability to see into a divine world. Edwin was excellent in keeping me aware of the order and consecration process. The statue looks better than the photos and is perfect.

    Great Job.
