This unique multicolored portrayal of Shakyamuni Buddha illuminates him in vivid hand-painted color and 24K gold gilding. His skin is painted a warm ochre-gold, with the palms and soles tinted a soft orange — one of the traditional auspicious marks of a Buddha — and his robe is rendered as a rich red-and-gold brocade, gold scrollwork flowing over a deep red ground with gilded trim bands and a sculpted green leaf ornament at the shoulder. He is depicted in the Bhumisparsha, or “earth touching,” mudra: on the verge of enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, the Buddha used this gesture to call the Earth Goddess to witness his vanquishment of the demon Mara — the pivotal moment that established Buddhism in our era.
