Our 31.75″ 1000 armed Avalokiteshvara statue is an authentic masterpiece created by our master artisan in Patan, Nepal and fire gilded in 24K gold using the traditional fire gilding method. The standing figure is framed by a monumental repoussé aureole, hand hammered with scrolling foliage and beaded rings and edged in red, its pigmented ground glowing between the thousand radiating hands — each hand bearing an eye of wisdom. The aureole is a separate, removable frame: the sculpture stands 27.75″ on its own and 31.75″ with the frame in place, at an impressive 15.4 kg of copper alloy and gold.
1000 Armed Avalokiteshvara Features
The eleven heads rise in three tiers of serene, gold painted faces with lapis-blue hair, each tier wearing an intricately worked crown set with turquoise and coral accents, with matching stone-centered ear ornaments and necklace. Above them, the wrathful face of Vajrapani blazes with flame-orange brows and beard, bared fangs, and a third eye of fierce awareness. Crowning the summit is Amitabha Buddha, his spiritual father, depicted in full Buddha form with curled hair and ushnisha.
The two principal hands press together at the heart in reverence, while the lower right hand opens in the Varada mudra of generosity; among the surrounding hands, a mala of prayer beads and a blossoming lotus on its stem are held aloft. Furthermore, the figure, robed in a finely engraved dhoti with a jeweled sash, stands on a double lotus pedestal above a stepped throne platform — every tier engraved with scrolling foliage, edged in beadwork, and ringed at its base by a band of lotus petals — with elephants and snow lions carved within its niches beneath a sculpted cloth drape.
The Avalokiteshvara Story
Avalokiteshvara is known as the Bodhisattva of Compassion because he vowed to forego final Buddhahood until every sentient being was freed from suffering. Laboring across countless ages, he saw that beings he had liberated fell back into their old patterns of suffering. Overwhelmed by the enormity of his vow, his body shattered into thousands of pieces.
Amitabha Buddha restored him with a far more powerful form: 1000 arms and 11 heads. The arms allow him to act everywhere at once, and the eleven heads let him see and hear the cries of the world in every direction.
