Some artisans specialize in a more expressive, painterly style, and such is the case with this colorful Shakyamuni: his robe is painted as a red-orange brocade flowing with gold lotus-and-vine patterning, edged in green jeweled trim bands, with a blue-accented pleated ornament at the shoulder, and even the soles of his upturned feet carry painted auspicious emblems.
Multicolored Shakyamuni Statue Features
Shakyamuni is seated on a polychrome double lotus pedestal depicting the Bhumisparsha, or “earth touching,” mudra — the defining gesture of the enlightenment itself. As the Buddha sat on the verge of awakening beneath the Bodhi tree, he touched the earth to call it as witness to his supreme accomplishment: the vanquishment of Mara, the defeat of the defilements, and the end of suffering. In his left hand he holds a dark lacquered alms bowl, its lid painted in blue and gold, symbolizing his renunciant life. The throne beneath him is a showpiece in itself — a white seat platform ringed with beading above two tiers of lotus petals painted in green, blue, red, and gold, on an orange base band finished with a gold key-fret rim.
Rising above his tightly curled blue-black hair is the ushnisha — the cranial protuberance counted among the 32 marks of a fully enlightened being, signifying the supreme wisdom attained at his awakening. Its rounded topknot form echoes the gathered hairstyles of ancient Indian nobility, but on a Buddha it represents spiritual attainment, not rank. His elongated earlobes, by contrast, do recall his royal past: as Prince Siddhartha, he would have worn the heavy disc earrings of the ancient Indian upper class, and when he renounced his inheritance and removed them, his stretched earlobes remained — a permanent reminder, carried on every Buddha statue, of the wealth he willingly left behind.
