This 8.25″ Sangye Menla (Medicine Buddha) statue is fully fire gilded in 24K gold with a brilliantly polished golden surface, seated on a single lotus throne, handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master Newar artisans using the traditional lost wax sculpting method, with fine hand-engraved detail on the robes and the defining attributes of myrobalan plant and medicine bowl. Learn everything about Medicine Buddha’s healing practice.
Sangye Menla is the Tibetan name under which Medicine Buddha is known and invoked in daily practice — Sangs rgyas meaning Buddha (one who has purified all obscurations and fully unfolded all enlightened qualities) and sman bla meaning medicine master or healing guru. It is the name practitioners use in mantra recitation, in prayer, and in the healing ceremonies that Medicine Buddha’s tradition includes. The Sanskrit name Bhaisajyaguru and the Tibetan Sangye Menla refer to the same being from two different linguistic and cultural contexts — the Sanskrit from the Mahayana sutra tradition of India, the Tibetan from the living practice tradition that Atisha and other Indian masters brought to Tibet, where it took root and flourished across all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
Sangye Menla Statue Features
Medicine Buddha sits in full lotus posture, his right hand in the Varada mudra — the boon-granting gesture, palm open and facing outward — holding the stem of the myrobalan plant between thumb and index finger. His left hand rests in the Dhyana mudra holding the lapis medicine bowl in the open palm. The myrobalan is both an ancient herbal remedy used widely in Tibetan and Ayurvedic medicine and a symbol of the perfected wisdom that the defilements — the core of all mental and physical suffering — cannot withstand. Diligent practice following the precepts and the path of Medicine Buddha is understood as the definitive cure.
