Our 19″ crowned Shakyamuni statue portrays the original Buddha seated in full lotus pose on a stacked double lotus pedestal, rendered entirely in a deep oxidized copper finish. Rather than the plain robes of most Shakyamuni depictions, this statue presents the Buddha crowned and adorned as the King of the Dharma — sovereign of the teaching he discovered — with a five-pointed crown rising to a central spire above a blue-painted headband, large disc earrings framed by fan ribbons, a layered beaded necklace with pendant, armbands, and beaded wristlets. The sculpture displays intricate detail throughout: examine the robe closely and you can appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship traditional lost wax casting demands, from the fine surface etching across the fabric to the carved fan-pleat spreading on the seat between his crossed legs. The Buddha depicts the Bhumisparsha and Dhyana mudras simultaneously, and upon request we will be happy to adorn the crown and jewels with turquoise and coral stones at no extra charge — the colored stones stand out beautifully against the dark finish.

The Bhumisparsha mudra, also known as the “earth touching” mudra, is displayed with the right hand reaching over the right knee, palm facing inward, the hand flat with fingers lightly touching the ground. The Buddha used this mudra to call the earth goddess to witness his vanquishing of the demon Mara at the moment of his enlightenment.
This crowned Shakyamuni statue also holds the alms bowl in the palm of his left hand, which rests in the Dhyana, or “meditation,” mudra. The alms bowl is deeply significant in Buddhism because it symbolizes the rejection of the material world and the spiritual nourishment the Buddha offers to all beings.
