This 8.25″ Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru — “Master of Healing”) sculpture is partly fire gilded in 24K gold — the face, hands, chest, and robe trim gilded against dark red oxidized copper robes — handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master Newar artisans using the traditional lost wax sculpting method. At 8.25″ this is a compact personal altar size suited to a home healing practice or meditation room.

The Buddhist medical tradition Sowa Rigpa — the traditional medicine of Tibet — identifies the three mental poisons of ignorance, attachment, and aversion as the root cause of physical illness, not merely in a metaphorical sense but in a specifically medical one. In Tibetan medical theory, the three primary humors that govern physical health (wind, bile, and phlegm) are each associated with one of the three poisons: the wind humor with ignorance, bile with aversion, phlegm with attachment. Imbalance in the humors produces disease; the imbalance is ultimately traced to imbalance in the corresponding mental states. Medicine Buddha’s practice addresses this at both levels simultaneously — the physical through his healing blessings and the root through the transformation of the poisons themselves. The foundational text of Tibetan medicine, the Four Tantras (Gyushi), is traditionally attributed to Medicine Buddha’s own teaching in his pure land, transmitted to human physicians through a lineage that connects formal medical practice to the living presence of the healing Buddha. Medicine Buddha Statue Features

Medicine Buddha sits in full lotus posture, his right hand in the Varada mudra — the wish-granting gesture, palm open and facing outward — holding the stem of the myrobalan plant between thumb and index finger. The myrobalan is the most therapeutically comprehensive plant in Tibetan medicine, used across all categories of illness; symbolically it represents the perfected wisdom that cures the defilements at the root of suffering. His left hand rests in the Dhyana mudra holding the medicine bowl of lapis lazuli nectar in the open palm — the elixir that treats both the physical and the ultimate illness simultaneously. The face is hand-painted with characteristic precision. View the fully gold gilded version of this Medicine Buddha statue.

  1. Matthew Wilkey (verified owner)

I was very impressed by the detail on this Sangye Menla. The face painting is fine and the sculpture is beautiful. Amazing blessings from this statue as soon as it was enshrined. The service that Edwin provided was very helpful with good communication. To have the statue consecrated by a qualified guru was magnificent. Will be back to purchase my products from here.
