Meaning of Antique Shakyamuni Buddha Statue
The Bhumisparsha mudra is also known as the “calling the earth to witness” mudra. The sacred meaning of the statue is based on the time when Shakyamuni was on the verge of reaching enlightenment. The Demon Mara knew he was almost ready to obtain his goal and Mara tempted him with earthly delights. However, Mara was unsuccessful at inducing Shakyamuni to give up. As a result, Shakyamuni called on the earth goddess to witness the vanquishment of Mara and the elimination of the defilements.
Additionally, Shakyamuni is depicted with the sacred alms bowl. The alms bowl is very symbolic in Buddhist belief because it is the sole means of livelihood for the monastics.
