Also known as Medicine Buddha, our Sangye Menla Tibetan thangka depicts him in a regal golden robe. Additionally, his skin is the color of lapis lazuli which is the healing color of Sangye Menla.
Sangye Menla sits in full lotus pose and holds his lapis medicine bowl in the palm of his left hand. It is full of the three nectars which will eliminate the three poisons of delusion, ill will and greed. In his right hand he is depicting the Varada – gift giving – mudra. The mudra symbolizes the Buddha has given the gift of medicine to sentient life. However, it is not a pharmaceutical cure. This powerful medicine heals suffering with karma purification and diligent practice.
This Sangye Menla Tibetan thangka features the Five Wisdom Tathagatas painted above him in the Buddhist heaven. Additionally, he is holding the stem of the myrobalan plant between his right thumb and index finger. The myrobalan plant is a proven herbal remedy that predates the original Buddha. It is still used today as an effective cure for certain ailments. Click here to learn more about Sangye Menla.
