This 18″ Medicine Buddha statue is fully fire gilded in 24K gold throughout — figure, robes, and double lotus throne in a unified golden surface, with the face gold painted and the eyes and features rendered with exceptional precision. At 18″ this is the largest and most formally imposing Medicine Buddha in the collection, the right scale for a Dharma center, monastery altar, or a dedicated healing shrine room where the statue is the primary object of veneration. The statue was handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master Newar artisans using the traditional lost wax sculpting method.

At this scale the physical marks of an enlightened being — the 32 major marks (mahapurusha lakshana) and 80 secondary marks that distinguish a fully awakened Buddha — are rendered with the detail and legibility that smaller statues cannot achieve. The statue bears the key marks visible on any fully enlightened Buddha: the ushnisha (the cranial protrusion at the crown of the head, indicating the highest development of wisdom); the clockwise-curling hair coils (one of the 32 great marks, reflecting the rightward orientation associated with auspiciousness in the Indian tradition); the three neck lines (one of the 80 secondary marks, traditional mark of royalty and high birth); the elongated earlobes (reflecting the heavy royal ear ornaments that Prince Siddhartha wore before renouncing them, now permanently stretched); and the urna (the third eye or white hair tuft between the brows, mark of the ability to perceive all realms of existence simultaneously). Together these marks declare at a glance that this figure has realized the full range of awakened qualities — that the being depicted has eliminated all obscurations and completed the Buddhist path. Medicine Buddha Statue Features

Medicine Buddha sits in full lotus posture on a double lotus throne, his right hand in the Varada mudra — the gift-giving or boon-granting gesture, palm open and facing outward — holding the stem of the myrobalan plant between thumb and index finger. His left hand rests in the Dhyana mudra with the lapis lazuli medicine bowl in the open palm. The three nectars in the bowl are understood to heal the three poisons of greed, hatred, and ignorance at their root — the same defilements that all Buddhist practice addresses, here made the specific domain of Medicine Buddha’s healing vow. Buddhists believe that diligent practice — including faithful recitation of his mantra — is the cure for unwholesome karma as the source of suffering, addressing both its immediate manifestations and its ultimate root.
