In the Golden Light Sutra, Vajrapani is given the title “Great General of the Yakshas”. Additionally, the Sanskrit word Vajrapani translates into English as “lightening bolt holder”. This is a name that portrays his powers of eliminating obstacles to the spiritual realization of devotees. On his crown, he wears the five skulls symbolizing the five poisons of greed, hatred, delusion, jealousy and pride. However, they have been converted into the five transcendent wisdoms.

Further adornments on this Vajrapani statue include a snake above his crown and he wears a long snake necklace around his neck. Furthermore, he wields the eponymous vajra over his right shoulder and holds a rope in his left hand. He also stands within the flames of pristine awareness and his hair is on fire. His three eyes symbolize his knowledge of the past, present and future.

Vajrapani was the personal protector of the Buddha and he is referenced in the Pali Canon. As a result, he is widely recognized in the major Buddhist schools including Mahayana, Vajrayana, Shaolin and Tibetan Buddhism. Click here to learn more about Vajrapani.
