The artist took special care to complete this White Tara thangka in divine form. As a result, she holds the uptala flower by the stem between the index finger and thumb in her left hand. The uptala is also known as the blue lotus. This special flower releases its fragrance in the moonlight. Indeed, this is a special flower for White Tara because she glows with the ambience of a thousand white moons.
White Tara sits in full lotus pose depicting the Abhaya mudra with her raised left hand. This is the symbol of fearlessness and protection. Indeed, it is believed that White Tara has more compassion for sentient life then is possible for any living being. Devotees believe her compassion for every life form is even greater than a mother’s love.
Additionally, with her right hand she is depicting the Varada mudra. This venerable mudra is also known as the gift giving or boon granting mudra. She gives the gifts of healing, compassion and longevity to the devotees who follow her teachings and recite her manta.
