Our Shakyamuni Buddha Tibetan thangka was hand painted by traditional painters in Kathmandu, Nepal. As a result, all of our Shakyamuni Buddha thangkas can serve as religious items and also Buddhist art. Additionally, Nepal is the preferred source of thangkas, ritual items and sculptures for the Tibetan monasteries. Therefore, when you purchase this Shakyamuni Buddha Tibetan thangka rest assured it is of monastic quality.

Shakyamuni Buddha is sitting in full lotus pose on a single lotus pedestal. Additionally, he wears the robes of a monk and the traditional alms bowl rests in the palm of his left hand. The alms bowl has special symbolism when it is depicted in Buddhist sculpture. This is because it holds the three nectars which will eliminate the three poisons of greed, hatred and ignorance.

His right hand is depicting the Bhumisparsha “earth touching” mudra. The Buddha performed this mudra as he was achieving the state of enlightenment and the defilements had been vanquished. As a result, he called on the earth goddess by touching the earth with his hand. This is the most venerable of Buddhist mudras and it represents the origin of Buddhism in our time.
