In Mahayana Buddhism, the Medicine Buddha (also known as Healing Buddha) is very highly venerated as the Buddhist doctor. However, it is not traditional medicine that provides the cure. Instead, the accumulation of good karma and diligent practice will cure any illness – spiritual, mental or physical. Our beautiful Healing Buddha Tibetan thangka depicts him in his pure land of Lapis Lazuli.
Healing Buddha sits in full lotus pose holding the stem of the myrobalan plant in his right hand. This is a medicinal herb used in ancient India that is still effectively used today. Additionally, Healing Buddha is depicting the Varada or “gift giving” mudra with the same right hand. This is because the Buddha gave the gift of medicine to sentient life.
A traditional Healing Buddha Tibetan thangka usually depicts him in his traditional lapis lazuli color. The semi precious stone called lapis lazuli radiates with the deep blue color of the Healing Buddha. Additionally, the pure land of Healing Buddha is built on lapis lazuli stone and the buildings are made of the seven treasures. The blue light of the Healing Buddha will illuminate the world and overcome the darkness of ignorance. Healing Buddha vows to save those who are overcome with evil, if they simply say his name or recite his mantra. Click here to learn more about the Healing Buddha.
