Our handmade Black Mahakala statue has a fearsome appearance that belies his compassionate nature. Indeed, Mahakala is one of the eight Dharmapala and he has a mandate as a wisdom protector. As a result, he has a wrathful appearance including three eyes and six arms. The three eyes symbolize his knowledge of the past, present and future. Indeed, the Mahakala meaning translates as “beyond time”. Additionally, the three eyes of Mahakala are a representation of the three bodies of the Buddha. He is also a Bodhisattva and the six arms symbolize his achievement of the six Bodhisattva perfections.

Additional symbolism of Black Mahakala includes the protection of wisdom and the destroyer of all obstacles. As a result, he stands on the elephant headed Hindu god Ganesha. This is because our Mahakala statue portrays the true remover of all obstacles to spiritual realization. Therefore, Vajrayana Buddhists believe that he transcends the protections provided by Ganesha. Furthermore, it is believed that devotees only need to sincerely wish for the protection of Mahakala. If so, all the obstacles to their spiritual realization will be destroyed.

In his six hands our Black Mahakala statue holds the kapala skull cup, kartika flaying knife, rope, damaru drum, trident and mala with skull beads. Additionally, he wears the crown adorned with the five skulls representing the transmutation of the five poisons into the five transcendent wisdoms.

The Mahakala mantra is: OM SHRI MAHAKALA HUM HUM PHAT SVAHA. Devotees use the Mahakala mantra to encourage virtuous attributes and overcome negitivity. Furthermore, Tibetan Buddhists believe that Black Mahakala is the wrathful embodiment of Avalokiteshvara.
