Traditional features of the statue include the third eye of wisdom between the brows, right turning hair coils, ushnisha topknot and alms bowl. Additionally, he is seated in the full lotus pose on a single lotus pedestal. The face if the statue is painted using real gold which gives a life like golden luster. Facial features of the statue are done with the intricate precision of the master artisan.
Shakyamuni is portraying the traditional Bhumisparsha “Earth Touching” mudra. This is the very special and significant Buddhist mudra that Buddha Shakyamuni displayed as be attained supreme enlightenment.
The Bhumisparsha mudra is portrayed while sitting in full lotus pose with the right hand draped over the right knee. Additionally, the hand is flat and the palm is facing inwards. The index finger is seen lightly touching the ground. Buddha Shakyamuni is calling on the earth goddess to witness his vanquishment of the demon Mara.
