In Tibetan Buddhism, the deity Hayagriva is the wrathful embodiment of Avalokiteshvara, the “Bodhisattva of Compassion”. Our Hayagriva statue is depicted with his consort Krodhishvari locked in sensual embrace. Symbolically, their embrace represents the eternal union of compassion and wisdom. As a result, they have transcended life and death to enter the state of enlightenment. Additionally, Hayagriva is known as the “horse necked one” which is symbolized by the horse’s head surmounting his own head.
Devotees believe that meditation on Hayagriva will cure diseases, especially severe skin disease such as leprosy. Furthermore, it is believed that Hayagriva makes the terrifying sound of a horse neighing which will crush all obstacles to spiritual realization. In ancient Tibet, the powers of Hayagriva were invoked by Tibetan horse traders who believed the sound of the horse would protect them from demons.
Hayagriva Statue Special Features
This antiquated Hayagriva statue is depicted with three faces and 6 arms. The statue is surrounded by the ring of flames that consume all negative mental states. Additionally, in his main right hand he holds the beautiful lotus flower in dedication to Avalokiteshvara. In his primary left hand he holds the kapala skull cup brimming with the blood and brains of the ego’s impermanence. His consort Krodhishvari also holds the kapala skull cup in her left hand and the kartika flaying knife in the right hand.
Furthermore, Hayagriva spreads his wings and stands in warrior pose with his consort stepping on two bodies. Beneath his left foot he steps on the breast of the goddess Kalarati who represents non-existence. Additionally, with his right foot he steps on the back of Bhairawa the worldly god who represents existence.
