There is some controversy among Buddhist scholars about whether Vajradhara has replaced Samantabhadra as the ultimate primordial Buddha. This controversy arises because Samantabhadra was the original primordial or “adi” Buddha. In fact, some Buddhist schools have not accepted Vajradhara as the new “adi” Buddha. Our Dorje Chang statue is adorned with jewels and also wearing the crown of a bodhisattva. In contrast, Samantabhadra is usually adorned with more conservative attire. Nonetheless, there is no dispute concerning their transcendental equivalence.
Dorje Chang Statue Features:
In nature, a diamond is considered indestructible and the only thing which can harm it is another diamond. Therefore, our Dorje Chang statue is appropriately depicted displaying the “Vajra” mudra. In English, the Vajradhara meaning translates as “diamond holder” and he is the ultimate primordial Buddha. Furthermore, Vajradhara is the Tantric form of Shakyamuni Buddha. Therefore, he is believed to be the supreme essence of all male Buddhas the “Ruler of the Vajra Beings”.
The “Vajra” mudra expressed by our Dorje Chang statue is depicted with both hands crossed in front of the Buddha’s heart. In his left hand he is holding the ghanta (bell) which symbolizes the feminine principle of wisdom. In his right hand he is holding a vajra which symbolizes masculine principles of enlightenment such as skillful means, compassion and bliss. It is this union of male and female aspects – compassion and wisdom – which lead to enlightenment. Click here to view our gold gilded Vajradhara statue.
