Dharma teachings are considered by Buddhists to be the cure for all suffering. The Mahayana teachings speak of the Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru) who presides over the “Lapis Lazuli” Pure Land. Large Medicine Buddha Statue Features

The basic features of the statue are well known. In his right hand he holds the stem of the myrobalan plant between his thumb and forefinger. Additionally, he is simultaneously expressing the Varada “boon granting” mudra. The myrobalan plant is an ancient herbal remedy used in Asia and it is still used today. These metaphors symbolize Medicine Buddha gave the gift of knowledge to sentient life.

Our Medicine Buddha statue is also holding the bowl of Lapis nectar in the palm of his left hand. Lapis is the symbolic nectar that will cure all suffering. However, this is not available by prescription it can only be acquired by diligent practice and abiding by “sila” – morality.

Furthermore, this Medicine Buddha statue is seated in full lotus pose on a double lotus pedestal. He wears the ushnisha topknot, hair coils, necklines and also possesses the 3rd eye of wisdom between the brows. However, the most dramatic feature is the lavishly decorated robe with elegant engravings on the front and back. Additionally, on the back of the statue near the base you will find the 8 auspicious symbols hand carved into the pedestal. Learn everything you need to know about Medicine Buddha meaning and healing practice.
