The Kapala set is traditionally used in both Vajrayana (Tantric) Buddhism and also Tantric Hindu practice. The word kapala has its origins in Sanskrit and it was subsequently adopted in Tibet. Indeed, kapala translates as human “skull” in English and it was traditionally created from a human cranium.
Our Kapala sets are used for multiple purposes during tantric rituals. Wrathful Tantric deities are commonly depicted carrying a kapala in Tibetan thangka paintings and sculptures. For use during esoteric rituals, the kapalas are filled with red wine and sometimes real blood. After the lama or yogi performs the ritual it is presented on the altar for the deity. Additionally, during the esoteric tantric ritual it is believed that the substance can be transmuted into wisdom nectar. This substance can then be used to achieve a higher state of transcendental meditation in the shortest time possible.
